AUGUST 14-16, 2026 • INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE & LIGHTSHIP WEEKEND •
OZ1NBG 2026
Hamradio activation of the Nordborg Lighthouse (DK0006)
OZ1NBG Activities:
During the ILLW weekend of august 15 and 16 a group of dutch hamradio operators will travel to Denmark and activate the lighthouse Nordborg Fyr (DK0006).
We aim to have as much fun during this weekend as we can, with a combination of friendship, food, drinks and a good amount of radio operating.
Part of the fun is experimenting with antennas and radios and of course to make friendly QSO's across the globe.
We will do so using the following modes:
HF bands - CW

Classic communication with dots and dashes, recorded by ear, generated with hand operated morse keys
HF Bands, SSB

Communication by phone using single sideband modulation
HF Bands, digital modes

Various means of getting our signals over the globe using computer generated signals
QO-100 satelite

Communication with the geo-stationary QO-100 (Qatar Oscar) satelite using microwave bands (13 & 3 cm amateur bands)
The Lighthouse
Situated west of Nordborg on the island of Als, the Nordborg Lighthouse (historically called Augustenhof Lighthouse) serves as a sector light. Built between 1902 and 1904, it first opened when Southern Jutland was under German rule. Following the 1920 reunification, the Danish lighthouse authority assumed control. The iconic lantern top is believed to be the work of Julius Pintsch from Berlin, maintaining a light characteristic of Oc WRG 5s.
The structure features a 20-meter round brick tower, matching the keeper’s residence in its distinctive yellow-plastered finish. When first constructed, the tower reached 18 meters. Significant upgrades occurred in 1927, including the addition of a fixed lens and petroleum mantle burner. By 1947, a modernization project increased the tower height by 2 meters, transitioned the system to electricity, and introduced 3rd‑order shutters. Currently, the focal plane reaches 27 meters with a light cycle comprising 4 seconds of illumination and 1 second of eclipse.
Historical records from 1940 indicate the German Luftwaffe established an air‑watch post (Flugwache) here shortly after the occupation began. Initially staffed by ten older soldiers, the unit was eventually replaced by roughly 20 younger troops. While these men were first housed in local private residences, a dedicated barrack for 25 personnel was erected on-site in 1942. Local lore notes that early in the occupation, soldiers requested use of the Pøl dairy’s bathing facilities, a practice that ceased once their own barracks were finished.
Technological evolution continued in 1974 when a type 109 lamp with a pre‑focused P‑40 socket was installed. Today, the maritime tradition lives on through new purposes; the former keeper’s house serves as the educational retreat Lejrskolen Fyret. Visitors can also explore the nearby coastal beauty of Købingsmark Strand, located just east of the lighthouse grounds.
